I like the juxtaposition of boys and girls in this piece---and the fact that you aren't afraid to take on 70's material, which seems to be tremendously overlooked these days in favor of the feel-good, all-about-me 80's. As you so aptly point out---we've still got a long way to go and these issues are a long way from being resolved (if they ever will be). The dilemma of being human among other human beings is bound up in our very DNA.
Are you kidding me? I live for the 70s - so much happened in the arts! Thanks for watching, looking and thinking about "Boys" Diane, well, in the good way. Big kiss.

Loved It! Sadly, so many of these issues still exist. Your voice needs to be heard....
'Too true - but gay marriage IS change. It is important because people won't need to hide. I personally don't think they need to be
'married' but that is my issue (and another blog). The right to do so however is vital.'

Wonderful - you led with my favorite quote from the movie!
And you are right for self hatred is still an issue that leads us to hate those most like us - very sad - I want to cry. Last time I watched the movie I did squirm so I agree it is far from passé.
Turning! Thank you Craig Coffee....nope, far far from passe. There is a lot of soul in it, even more truth. Harold is the ultimate but Emory is my favorite. xx.

Totally agree with Dick! The Times needs to hire you, Mark! Your "This week in the culture" is excellent and surpasses by a long shot most of what passes for cultural commentary in print media these days. Thoughtful with interesting connections and meaningful observations....Bravo!
I am mad at Meryl for stealing that Oscar this year - enough accolades already! Thanks for watching Keely.

Look at it this way, Mark: Meryl was the underdog. She had lost the previous 12 nominations, so she was overdue. Feel better? Sounds like you're suffering from "Streep-fatigue" (Meryl's own words)....
That was amazing, Mark. I really enjoyed it and loved your insight. And I know idea that Mr. Withers worked for Douglas. I worked in the McDonald-Douglas building in Long Beach. Keep them coming and apply at the Times! XOXO

What a trip to see clips from Boys in the Band. I'd forgotten all about it. I was crazy about it back then, and loved remembering it. it was groundbreaking and funny and such a welcome innovation. Thanks for reminding me and for celebrating it. Your blog is fabulous!
